Session #76 · 1939–41

Speech #760076185

As I sat there in that famous hall and listened to stirring patriotic music my heart was touched and thrilled as it always is when I visit Independence Hall. As I prepared to address the meeting there on Flag Day my thought went back to my boyhood days. for a large number of foreignborn Americans and their descendants were present. Again I recalled that my father. born in a foreign land. was naturalized under the flag of the United States and remained a loyal and peaceful citizen under that flag to the day of his death. Through his naturalization I became a citizen of this free land. This was my fathers flag. and it has been and is my flag. I was glad to have an opportunity to gather with so many other Americans in Independence Hall in Philadelphiathe birthplace of the Constitution and the home of the flagin behalf of the fundamental institutions of our Government.
