Session #76 · 1939–41

Speech #760055602

I say nothing but praise for them. regardless of their respective positions and regardless of their political affiliations because for every Member of this body I have the very deepest affection. In that connection I recall that a few days ago in the city of New York. when I delivered an address in the banquet hall of the Hotel Astor. at Fortysecond and Broadway. under the auspices of the American Defense Society. to which address I will refer later for a particular reason. I mentioned the fact that my colleague the senior Senator from New York had introduced a bill providing for the admission into the United States of 20.000 refugee children within the next 2 years. I took occasion to say that I honored the Senator from New York. that I knew of no man for whom I had a greater affection. that we differed only in opinion. My colleagues know. as I do. that we would be foolish to become angry at one another because we do not always vote the same way or because our opinions differ upon various questions.
