Session #76 · 1939–41

Speech #760053246

Yes. the Supreme Court did agree. in some particulars. and I hope the gentleman is able to get some consolation out of that rather unusual opinion. The Department of Labor attempted to deport Strecker. They proceeded to a point where a warrant of deportation was issued. This Government found that he was an undesirable alien. that he was a Communist. and that he should be deported. but the country from which he came refused to accept him. Then Strecker sought relief in the courts. and there was much delay. However. he was finally discharged by the court. Had the court upheld the deportation. and had the country of origin refused to take him back. he would be with us regardless of the findings of the Labor Department and the courts.
