Session #76 · 1939–41

Speech #760002337

Mr. President. if the Senator will permit me. recently we returned from Puerto Rico and Santo Domingo. and came to the port of New York. and there we were told that the Europa was arriving from Germany with 1.500 refugees. I said. "What will these poor people do? What can they do to employ themselves here in America?" I was told by an officer of the port that that was easy. that they had all been promised jobs within 2 weeks. I have information that that is substantially correct. Certain officials of the community were referred to in that connection. That means. if the Senator will permit a further statement. that native Americans will have to go off the pay roll. and will have to walk the streets of New York wearing out their shoe leather In their native land. under their own flag. looking for employment while refugees from foreign countries are coming here and taking their jobs away from them. I am opposed to any such policy.
