Session #75 · 1937–39

Speech #750024249

We did have hearings on a similar bill introduced by a member of the committee. Mr. STRNES. which would have deported the aliens who are now in this country unlawfully. but those of us who favored this legislation could not get enough votes in the committee to bring it out for consideration. I agree with the statement made a few moments ago by the gentleman from Texas that we. as Members of Congress. should protect our American labor by deporting foreigners and save the jobs in America for American people. but the bill under consideration is limited in its scope. The bill merely protects a few American laborers on the borders of Canada and Mexico and does not touch the real situation prevailing in this country today. Practically every Member of Congress knows that there are thousands upon thousands of aliens in this country at this very moment. who came into this country unlawfully. and who are today holding jobs that rightfully belong to the American people. and the Department of Labor is making no effort whatever to deport them. Since we cannot get the immigration and naturalization officials in the Department of Labor to do their duty under our present laws. the Committee on Immigration and Naturalization should bring a bill before the House providing that it shall be unlawful for any employer of labor to employ an alien. I have no doubt but what this Congress would pass it promptly. Mr.
