Session #74 · 1935–37

Speech #740217150

We also realize that we have to anticipate that this program cannot be carried on indefinitely. and there must be a stopping point somewhere. Why should we take American taxpayers money. money out of the Federal Treasury. and use it for the purpose of feeding aliens who are in this country illegally? What we need is a rebirth and a realization that we should look after our home people first and more rigidly enforce our immigration laws. It is a wellknown fact that the enforcement of Immigration laws in this country in the past has been a joke. I am convinced from arguments offered here on the floor of this House that there are many aliens in this country who are good citizens. some of whom have furnished soldiers for the World War. who cannot qualify on account of being unable to read or write. Meritorious cases should be carefully dealt with. but they are few in comparison with the wholesale unlawful entry of foreigners in this country.
