Session #72 · 1931–33

Speech #720074746

I did not understand the question. I took the trouble. gentlemen. to communicate with the Attorney General of the United States. and I am happy to say that the Attorney General fully agrees with the chairman and several members of the committee that it would be a dangerous precedent to vote out a bill containing the bare words "aliens who are communists" without surrounding that phrase with some language that would safeguard the word " communists." The Attorney Generals letter is dated April 2. 1932. and is addressed to me as chairman of the House Committee on Immigration. Let me read it to you: OFFICE OF THE AT rromEY GENERAL. Washington.
