Owing to illness I was not here when this bill was under consideration the last time. Measures textually the same upon two former occasions. as I recall. had passed the Senate after some discussion. but with but little opposition. The committee reported each measure unanimously after hearings and mature consideration. The Senator from Pennsylvania. who. perhaps. has evinced as much. if not more. interest in immigration questions than any other Senator. was a member of the committee. He was familiar with the testimony and joined his colleagues in reporting the bill. The Senator from California . the chairman of the committee. also joined in reporting the bill.
