Session #71 · 1929–31

Speech #710212494

I am pressing for an explanation by somebody who has made a comprehensive study of this bill. Here is another letter to which I want to call attention. This is from tihe National Council of Jewish Women. New York: Our organization heartily farors the Cable bill as it passed the Hlouse. but the Senate commiltee has attached to the bill a series of new provisions. some of which are highly desirable. while others merit strong opposition. The most important provision which our organization most heartily opposes reads as follows: " That no alien shall be admitted to citizenship unless lie Is able to speak. read. and write the English language understandingly and possess a knowledge of United States history equivalent to that set forth In the citizenship textbook published and distributed by (he Bureau of Naturalization." That is in this measure.
