President. this bill as it came to the Senate from the House was one which excited considerable interest. I do not know when I have had as many people talk to me about a bill as have spoken to me about this one. The bill as it passed the House and came to the Senate committee intended to relieve certain nativeborn women who have married aliens of some unnecessary naturalization requirements growing out of the present law. I think the bill is a meritorious one. its purposes are splendid. and I think it should pass. However. in the Committee on Immigration the bill was liberally amended. I was not present when the amendments were first proposed and were printed. I was there the day that favorable report was given on the measure and the amendments adopted by the committee.
