I have now in my possession a letter from a man in Detroit who tells me that there are thousands of people who are being fed there by the city. It was pointed out that. while those thousands are being fed by the charity of the city of Detroit. there are many people of alien birth. both from Mexico and Canada. who are holding positions there. I realize that there is this argument in favor of Canadian immigration. which would probably not apply to the kind of Mexican immigration we secure. namely. that the Canadian immigrants. perhaps. who go to Detroit and to other cities close to the border are more of the character of skilled laborers. and it is doubtless true that they draw salaries commensurate with the salaries which are paid to the American citizens. but that is not true of Mexicans.
