This condition continued until the World War. and at the close of the World War Hon. John L. Burnett. who was chairman of the Immigration Committee. coming from the district that I represent. brought before the American Congress. as he had been attempting to bring for years and years. the necessity for tightening up the Immigration laws and preventing the millions of foreigners coming to our shores. Unfortunately death came to this great man. and he was removed from the scene of activity. but for the 20 years he had been in Congress he had been studying immigration laws and had made it a specialty. He was a master of the subject. I dare say that if he had lived many of the imperfections of our present law of which the gentleman from New York complains today could have been ironed out.
