Session #71 · 1929–31

Speech #710026074

Eleventh. We ought to oppose national origins because it offers no improvement whatsoever over the basis which is now in effect. I insist that we ought to give very serious thought. and I want to point that out again. to the manner In which these various estimates have been submitted to the Senate by the experts upon whom has devolved the job of ascertaining what the quotas would be under the immigration law. We ought to look to the five estimates that have been made. three of them by this board of experts. and see how they have wabbled. how they have varied from one estimate to another. I discussed this matter at some length on Monday. and I now ask permission to have incorporated in the REcoR at this point a table of immigration quotas printed for the use of the Committee on Immigration and Naturalization of the House of Representatives on February 28 of this year. showing the various estimates which have been submitted.
