Speech #700136031

There are 25.000 applicants at that one office who are anxious to pay the United States the sum of $4 each. a total of $100.000. which we are unable to receive because of the shortage of office assistants. This committee will never receive any complaint of these conditions from Mr. Sturgis or any of his hardworking assistants. whose loyalty to the service induces them voluntarily to struggle against insuperable odds to make the office function. But I personally know the situation and it is my duty to bring to the attention of my colleagues of the House the real facts as I know them to exist in the New York Naturalization Bureau. Has the chairman and his committee considered a large appropriation?
