Session #70 · 1927–29

Speech #700123537

It is for the best interests and common welfare of our country. If we are to maintain an American standard of living. properly safeguard American rights. institutions. and interests. then we should have no hesitancy in throttling down this inflow of persons from other lands. Selective and restrictive immigration is the best protection -for our country that was ever provided by any land. We want to be fair and just in our relationships with other nations and other peoples. but first we want to be fair and just to our own citizens. Confronted by the problem of assimilating those who are already here. the time is past for introducing vast groups who are alien to our language. alien to our political institutions. to our habits of life. to everything we hold dear.
