The alien and sedition laws. which provided for registration. caused from twentyj to twentyfive thousand French aliens to leave the country through fear of consequences thereof. Many humble aliens were harassed. oppressed. and punished unjustly (see American Historic Association Reports of 1912). and as a result the Federalist Party was swvept from power. The Chinese registration of 1892. which placed untold power over the Chinese alien ill the hands of inspectors. resulted in the greatest amount of oppression and corruption.
