Session #68 · 1923–25

Speech #680146048

Speaker and gentlemen. we tried to defeat the original resolutions. but in this we failed. and the House saw fit to pass it. I want to say this to show how you can easily make mistakes. Tihe resolution (H. J. Res. 283) which passed yesterday would have admitted from 100.000 to 500.000 aliens not admissible under the present law and in contravention of the new immigration law of 1924. It would have admitted every seaman on the high seas. it would have admitted every man who left his home before the 26th of May. 1924. and who had embarkedstarted--on his way to the United States. Tie stream would have been endless from every corner of the globe.
