The class of cases which I am now discussingAmerican women who. though loyal at heart. became alien enemies by their marriage to Germansof course. includes many thousands of instances where the husband was a resident here. and ninny cases where the husband. desirous of becoming an American citizen. had taken out his first papers before the war broke out. leaving both him and his wife in the legal status of alien enemies. Let me state right here that I believe In the vast majority of cases these husbands were loyal to the land of their adoption. even though the adoption was not yet complete. There could not have been a very great difference between them and the many thousands of fully naturalized citizens who served in our armies. A few weeks ago I heard Mr. David Jayne Hill. at a luncheon of the Englishspeaking Union. make the statement that more than 40 per cent of our soldiers who fell in the battles of the Argonne Forest bore German names.
