The number of counties in that State is very large in proportion to those in other States. The population in each county is small. comparatively. so that everyone in the county practically knows everyone else. There has been very little immigration into that State. probably about 2 per cent. as I get it from the census figures. It is a natural desire upon the part of friends not to convict friends. if they can avoid it. I have figures before me taken from the New York Tribune. which show that the State of Georgia has had the largestl number of lynchings.
