This report deals with statements made in tile House of Commons Thursday by Mr. HArmsworth. undersecretary. of foreign affairs. concerning the diplomatic protests -of thatgreat Government against tie rejection bythe United States of immigrants from.-that nation and our refusal to admit certain. of thetn. The report mentions the case of a man named. Mark Glanivill. a South African. who undertook to. return to the United States -in order toresume his studies at a- Young Mens Christian Ass6cia.tion schoolin Massachusetts. When he was detalined at Ellis Island for the purposeof being put through the ordinary examination. that all immigrants- aresubjected to even if adfiIssible. lie protested. stoodon his :rights as.a British .subject. refused to be examined. and. asked to lbe deported. Thereupon the proceedings. on the part of the United States ceased. but the. suggestionwas made that if this man did not want to undertake the examination that: we require of all he might go to Canada. a sister nation to the South African Republic. and Mi: Glauvill thereupon undertook tb. go. to Canadai I am told. and Canada rejected him. Great Britain protested to our State Department some time ago. and has made numerous other protests.
