Session #66 · 1919–21

Speech #660333631

That is just what I was coming to. if the Senator please. During the last six months we have seen indications of a renewal of the new immigration . that is. it was suspended during the war. but during the first six months of the present fiscal year it has increased in such numbers that we may well believe it will reach perhaps the prewartimd figures. There is a feeling in the country that this labor is not demanded. particularly as it moves to the centers of population rather than to the rural and agricultural sections of the country. The great problem that we have to solve is. first. the problem of selection. wimther we can devise some means by which we can admit aliens who will go to the rural communities and to the agricultural communities.
