Speech #660316541

Parker. of Louisiana. today. Gov. Parker also stressed the necessity of the rigid exclusion from this country 6f undesirable immigrants. "One of the principal features of the address of the Louisiana executive was the point he made in declaring that America had permitted manufacturers to build up vast fortunes through protective tariffs on manufactured products. and that now it was time to save tIe farmers from ruin by placing a protective tariff on agricultural products to keep the strong. clean. vigorous. and selfrespecting American workingman from coming into competition with foreign pauper labor." Gov. Parker said: "Today there is no class of people in the world more disheartened. discontented. and unsettled than those who. by their own efforts. produce the essentials to feed and clothe the world. Under the spur and impetus of Government appeals and their natural patriotism. they not only subscribed to Liberty bonds. which many have been forced to sell at a heavy discount. but went the limit in the production of foodstuffs of all kinds and of live stock.
