Session #66 · 1919–21

Speech #660243379

I do not know who he is. I think there is a feeling on both sides of the House. quite generally. that the Assistant Secretary of Labor is not performing his full duty in this regard. Now. we appropriated $750.000 for the trial and deportation of alien anarchists in a dizfcieicy bill. and on April 22. when the department came before the Committee on Appropriations asking for this appropriation of $600.000 for deportation. they had expended only $45.000 of the $750.000 and incurred obligalions. they estimated. of approximately $170.000. That was on April 22 of this year. Now. certainly this department is not functioning very vigorously along this line. 1ut the position of the committee was that this law should be enforced. these alien anarchists deported.. and whether Mr. Post is to be -entrusted with the enforcement of the law next year or not I do not know. Congress does not know. but the committee was positive of one thingthat every redblooded American in favor of the enforcement of the law and the deportation of every alien anarchist in the United States should go forward with that work. and that ample funds should be provided for the purpose. That is the reason for the appropriation.
