Session #66 · 1919–21

Speech #660186960

That is. to put it brutally. for the purpose of guaranteeing Great Britain and France in their war loot. For these purposes we are to sacrifice. I want some constitutional lawyer on the Democratic side of the Chamber to point me to the clause of the Constitution that gives us the right to levy a dollar of taxation for the beneit of a European or Asiatic country. I want some constitutional lawyer to point me to the authority in the Constitution for the United States to levy an army. to call forth our sons and send them forth to be sacrificed in the battles of other nations. for the benefit of other nations. I want to know where you got the authority to vote that the son of an American citizen can be drafted and taken from his home and sent to die in the vars of Europe. not for the benefit of America. but in sacrifice for the benefit of European countries.
