Session #66 · 1919–21

Speech #660158928

It would be a beautiful sight down there to get all these negroes who iire illiterate up to the age of 45 years and herd them together and drive them under a State law to school. It is all wrong..in my opinion. The bill ought not to pass. We ought to pass more stringent immigration liaws. We ought to spend in some other way the $35.000.000 that is proposed to be expended in the bill. It seems to me it would be much more in the interest of this country if we would economize in this bill and make reasonable appropriations in other directions. especially at this time. when the steering conmithte of the Republican Party is trying to preach economy along certain lines.
