Session #66 · 1919–21

Speech #660144105

Mr. Chairman. I do not know that any additional law Is necessary to deport these undesirable aliens from this country. but some of the officials of this Government. especially in the Department of Labor. seem to think so. and as long as there is any doubt in the mind of anyone connected wilti the Government. I am in favor of this bill or any other that will take these undesirable characters out of the United States. Not onlyam I in favor of deporting these aliens who are endeavoring to spread the seeds of discord and break down the Constitution and undermine and overthrow the Government. but I think a law ought to be passed through this Congress applying the samedoctrine to the nativeborn American citizen who is doing that same thing. The man who preaches that sort of doctrine either ought tobe shipped or shot. Our Government is here for theprotection of all the people. and whenever any man. whether he bea foreigner. ignorant or educated. or nativeborn sc6imndrel. preaches a doctrine to overthrow the Government. fruin. damnation. and sabotage. he ought to be handled with a shotgun or deported to some foreign land. Our nativeborn anarchists- and Bolshevists do not -owe allegiance to an other coiitry. and you might do an injustice to Russia or Germany or Hungary or Austria by sending them over 1919." DECEmMER 20 there. The thing to do is to handle them by a specific law from the Committee on the Judiciary.
