Congress during the administration of the first Adhns proceeded to meet the emergency by a series of enactments. -known to history as the alien and sedition laws. They were -confronted :as much with a condition. instead -of a theory. as we now are. Upon the 18th -of .June. 1798. Congress asnended the -law regarding naturalization. they amended it again on the 25th of June. and still later upon the 6th of July. They provided. among -other things. for the deportation of any alien vhose presence. in the opinion of the President of the United States. was dangerous to the peace and safety of -the United States.
