Speech #640069790

We compel outr own people to acquire at least some education. Why should we not require it of those who would come here from other lands? This country will not suffer by the exclusion of those who could not pass the literacy test provided by this bill. If it becomes a law the requirements will soon become known in other lands. and those who would really want to come to America to livewho would be worthy of citizenship in a Republicwould soon learn to read and write well enough to pass the literacy test. Others we do not want. I can not but admire the sentiments of those who still cling with a sort of tenacious fetishism to the old doctrine that America is an asylum for the oppressed and its doors must be left open for the free entry of any who would come from the four corners of the earth.
