Mr. President. when interrupted I had been speaking of the proportion of the recent immigrants who have become citizens or who have taken out their first papers as one of the elements which enter into the question of their desirability as citizens. but as further showing that the new immigration to a very large extent has not come here for the purpose of establishing homes and becoming members of the great American family I want to call attention to the fact that between 1899 and 1910. a period of 12 years. of all those admitted 69.5 per cent were males and only 30.5 per cent were females. Taking them by nationalities. the proportion of males in the immigration from south Italy was 78.6 per cent. Hebrews. 56.6 per cent. Polish. 69.5.
