Session #63 · 1913–15

Speech #630174500

It would seem. thenI address my remark to the Senator from Virginia againthat we are not merely taking care of a lot of Mexican soldiers. if we dignify them by the name of " soldiers." but we are taking care of their families and of other refugees that may stray over. The other day it was stated that there had been about 80 births in one of these camps in a very short length of time. and the question might arise whether the Government is conducting a lyingin asylum downthere for the benefit of the Mexican people. All of these matters ought to be presented to the Senate. so that we may know whether we are taking care merely of soldiers or whether we are expending a half million dollars for taking care of Mexicans who find this country a better place in which to live than is Mexico.
