Speech #630132980

As I rode along in the car I picked up a newspaper published in Mobile and noticed a headline which was the single word "shame." The paragraph read: Alabama can raise the best corn in the country. yet we shipped in 20.000.000 bushels last year. I have no doubt there is a shortage of other cereals in that country. What is most needed in the South? People. It is true they have the black man. but the colored man is not a constructive man. He works for today. He has no thought of the future. The immigrant works for tomorrow. Gentlemen have spoken of the old immigrants. They have been fulsome in their eulogies of those who came here from Ireland. Germany. and the Scandinavian countries.
