Louissome of the ablest of our professional and business men are the progeny of parents who could neither read nor write when they landed here from foreign shores. Today they are as good citizens of this country as there can be found. The illiteracy test will neither cheapen nor degrade American labor. It will not keep out the undesirables. It will hinder and in many cases prevent good emigrants from coming to this country. We want all the good ones we can get. They are needed in the city factories and mills and to build railways. and they could. many of them. be used to advantage in the South on the plantations and otherwise.
