Session #62 · 1911–13

Speech #620269397

Mr. Chairman. very many of the immigrants who come to this country come because of religious persecution abroad. but an equal number. perhaps. come because of political persecution. which at times is even more harsh than religious persecution. It is a difference of opinion between those who do not agree with the crowned heads or the potentates of foreign countries and those who are subservient thereto. and it would seem a fair inclusion to admit the man who comes to this country because of political convictions differing from those of the ruling dynasties. as well as those who come because of religious beliefs that do not confoii to the established standard. It seems to me this ameidment ought to be adopted. and that we should not deny admittance into the United States of those who come because of political persecution in foreign lands.
