Ie had entered into the military or naval .forces of France and taken part in conflicts between France and Great Britain. The course that he followed was a course that was forbidden by the laws of the United States to American citizens. and sometime afterwards. :returning to this country upon a visit. Williams was arrested. indicted. and tried for it violation of those laws. He. pleaded and undertook to prove that lie had renounced his allegiance to the United States and had become a French citien. and that evidence was exclude 1. and the exclusion was sustained by the Supreme Court of tle United States upon the ground that he could not divest himself of his allegiance to his native country and become a citizam of another country.
