I instance a case in my own State in which in one district of the State the clerk of the court is receiving not less than $10.000 a year for compensation. while his district court judge gets $6.000 and the circuit court judge gets $7.000. and in addition to that today a circuit court judge and district court judge is obliged to pay his own expenses when he travels from one district to the other. while the clerk has his traveling expenses paid. Now. In this country 276 men are occupying the position of circuit court clerks. and in a great number of those cases they occupy not only the position of circuit court clerks but also district court clerks. and under the law they are entitled to receive compensation of $3.500 a year in each capacity. and in addition to that they are entitled to receive onehalf of all the naturalization fees in those courts. I could give an illustration. if I had time. of one district. of one circuit in this country where the clerk Is clerk of the circuit court and the district court in five places and is entitled to receive $35.000 a year in compensation if the fees amount to that much. Now. this movement. in my judgment. is a manifestation of the activity of this association of clerks.
