Session #60 · 1907–09

Speech #600155057

Now I read from a letter written by the chairman of the Interstate Commerce Commission. We wrote to him to find out whether it was practicable to do what the gentleman from Alabama suggests. whether it was practicable to extend this law to the ferries and the steamboat lines. and he tells us that it is not practicable. He says: The members of the commission have no special familiarity with the subjectmatter of .dour communication. but so far as we can judge it would not be practicable to apply the provisions of section 12 of the immigration act of 1907. copy of which was inclosed in your letter. to transportation lines. -such as steam and electric roads and ferries. operating between the United States and Canada and the United States and Mexico. Mr. Speaker. look at the practical effect of this law.
