Session #59 · 1905–07

Speech #590162974

If it is satisfactory to the Senators from California. well and good for them. Under a certain condition. it is provided that the President of the United States may refuse to allow Japanese to come into the United States. the condition being where they are coming in to the detriment of labor conditions in the United States. That is not the only question involved in regard to Japanese cooly immigration. Every representative from the Pacific coast knows that there are objections to Japanese coolies besides their competition with our labor. There is on the Pacific coast more objection to Japanese coolies than to Chinese coolies. We do not need either Japanese or Chinese labor on the Pacific coast. If you could land them at Charleston. or New Orleans. or New York. or Boston. we would be better satisfied.
