The civil war left the various industries of the United States in a most unsettled condition. The great wave of immigration from 1S67 to 1873 and the great panic of the latter year led to a most wonderful change of population and most remarkable migration to the cheap farming lands of the West. The great graingrowing and wheatraising States west of Pennsylvania increased their area under corn and wheat by 39.000.000 acresthe equivalent of 70 per cent of the increase of the area under crops of all kinds In the United States. At once the economic conditions of the country were faced with the problem of consuming the wheat that was being raised in this wonderful new development of the West.
