In referring to the American Army .in the Revolutionary war. states: No troops in that Army had shown themselves more courageous. more patient. and more devoted than the Pennsylvania line. Its privates and noncommissioned officers consisted chiefly of Immigrants from the North of Ireland. etc. In another place. In describing the feeling of the people of the Carolinas toward England. he states: * The Irish Presbyterians. on the other hand. appear to have been everywhere bitterly antiEnglish. and outside of New England it is probable that they did more of the real fighting of the Revolution than any other class.
