Speech #570100020

My recollection is there are 87.000. Nevertheless. the attention of the Senate is now brought to the fact that out of a population which certainly is 400.000 by this timeand it is. in the opinion of the committee. many more. perhaps 500.000that out of a population of that vast number. 87.000 at most are Indians and the rest of them. over 300.000. to put it at the lowest possible figure. are not Indians. but are American citizens. of our own color. immigrants to that Territory from other States. I say. Mr. President. it is fortunate that the Senator from Tennessee has called attention to this point at the present time. because there has been an assumption. largely growing out of the fact of the name of the Territorythe Indian Territorythat most of the people there were Indians.
