Session #57 · 1901–03

Speech #570068564

It was not my intention by the amendment which I offered to protest at this time against or to prevent Germans or others who may desire beer from procuring the same. The object. and the prime object. of my amendment was that the Government of the United States in the use of its property or buildings should not be connected with the saloon or liquorselling business. Certainly the first experience of the immigrant when he lands on our shores should not be with the liquor traffic under favor of the Government. I ask to have read in my time a newspaper clipping. which. I think. will indicate the feeling of a large portion of the people of this country on the subject.
