Speech #570031377

Chairman. allow me to say that I think Congress pursued a wise and just pollcy when many years ago it began the improvement of this great river. There is certainly no river so national in character and no project more important and farreaching than the improvement of suchl a river. I sincerely hope that the project will never be abandoned until that whole valley has been protected. and until those courageous people who have done so much for themselveswho have spent $2.25 for every dollar spent by the General Government--shall have been placed in a position of perfect safety. in such a position that immigration will flow there from all parts of the world. and that we shall speedily have a population of from 15.000.000 to 16.000.000 of thriving. prosperous citizens of these great United States.
