Speech #550083733

This ground of the gentlemans opposition is not. therefore. based on any legal right possessed by those in Hawaii who oppose annexation. It can only be founded on a sentimental regard for the native Hawaiian. If the philanthropists would descend from their ethereal abode long enough to ascertain the facts. they would find that. almost without exception. all the ministers of the gospel. most of the better educated natives. all the boards of foreign and domestic missions. the practical educators. and those who have contributed years of their time. energy. and means to the Hawaiian people. who feel that their future welfare is a trust too sacred to be sacrificed upon the altar of Mongolian supremacyall these are earnestly working and praying for the success of the treaty of annexation as their only hope for the native Hawaiian.
