Session #55 · 1897–99

Speech #550078278

I quite agree with the Senator from Washington in his opinion that this ought to be a matter about which there can be no sectional interest. that we are all of us bound to look out for the interests of the whole country. without regard to the special sections from which we come. and. indeed. it would be difficult to make a sectional matter out of this if anyone should try. I suppose there is no Eastern State in which there are not great numbers of persons proposing to go to the Klondike. Perhaps the populous and crowded Eastern States will send more of their pteepleeven more than their proportion perhapsthan those States which are nearest to the scene. I know that there is in the city where I dwell one very active company organizing an immigration to the Klondike region. I am getting applications for maps and for other. information. and I presume all other Senators are. The fisheries are mainly a nursery for seamen.
