What they had failed to learn through their heads in campaigns of education they have now learned through their stomachs. After a terrible nightmare. lasting four long years. they have now returned into the open arms of their friends. and ask protection for themselves. their families. and their homes against bad money. low wages. enforced idleness. and European competition. What they fear is not the kind of competition which results from immigration. but it is the cheap labor performed in Europe. The immigrant is a consumer from the first moment lie puts his foot upon American soil. and when he. by securing employment. becomes a ])roducer. he is enabled by his earnings to consume even in a higher degree. But the mechanic in Europe who is employed in making things for the American market which the American workman. under proper protection. could make himself. takes time bread from the mouth of our citizen without giving him any kind of an equivalent. and without buying a cents worth in the American -market. That Europe buys from -us because we buy from it is an exploded theory.
