Session #55 · 1897–99

Speech #550002531

We hear from our friends on the other side of the Chamber that the great need of the hour is a greater volume of money. Join with us in passing this bill and thereby save to your own country the millions of dollars now sent abroad. which ought to remain and will remain to swell the volume of our own currency. It seems to me it would be well to support this bill with another bill which would protect the American workmen from the competition of the underpaid workmen abroad. It is to be hoped in the near future that public sentiment will justify public men in passing immigration laws which will properly protect American workmen. [Here the hammer fell.]
