Speech #540082053

Illinois. and Kansas. Twothirds of the AustroHungarians are in the North Atlantic States. Of 1.000 immigrants landing at the port .of New York during three daysof last December. 90 per cent of the illiterates remained on the North Atlantic Seaboard. and during this year since the 1st of January. 95 per cent of those immigrants have remained in the same section of the country. And yet. Mr. Speaker. we are told not to put up the bars against this :immigration because there is plenty of room in the great West! That is literally true. but. for all practical purposes in the consideration of this question. the great West might as well be in the same crowded condition as ourNortheast. because these immigrants -never seek that section. Mr. Speaker. there is another thoughtwhich ought to be brought to the attention of this body.
