Session #54 · 1895–97

Speech #540082053

I -shall have to hurry through my remarks in order to give other gentlemen an opportunity to be heard. but before I take my seat I wish to read a few figures for the information of :the House. I have culled them from reliable sources. Fiftyeight per cent of the objectionable races of immigrants live in the cities. The North Atlantic and North Central States contain nearly fivesixths of the city population of this country. That section also contains 40 per cent of the total foreign population of the Union. In 124 of the principal cities of the United States 29 per cent of the total population is foreign born. In the rest of the country it is only 10J per cent. Very little immigration has gone south 6f the Ohio and the Potomac..or in -the transmississippi country south of the thirtyseventh degree of latitude. Threefourths of the Poles are in the cities of New York. Pennsylvania.
