Session #53 · 1893–95

Speech #530182117

I do not rise to object to anything that may be necessary in the enforcement of the exclusion act or the treaty with reference to the coming of Chinese into this country. but this is a day of boasted economy and necessary economy. If there ever was a time in our history when the economy which has been insisted upon in Democratic platform . and not only that. but believed in by Republicans. should be enforced. it is now when our receipts are far less than our expenditres. Whatever is necessary to be done in the matter of the enforcement of the Chinese exclusion act and to prevent the coming of Chinamen into this country certainly ought to be done. But I had supposed that practically all the Chinamen in this country had registered ald that the business of ransporting Chinamen from the coun f r was not in fact going on to any extent. and that there was no special ncessity for it under our laws. It seems that to prevent their coming in we have thirtseven special inspectors.
