The Secretary made no distinction. as I recall the matter. Iwill furnish the Senator with the report of the Secretary. but I do not think he made any divisions. The Secretary of the Treasury. under date of December 1I. 1894. which was after the bill had passed the other House. addressed the following letter to the Speaker of. the House of Representatives: Sn: In the act making appropriations for sundry civil expenses of the Government for the fiscal year ending June 30.1895. the sum of Q YO00 was appropriated to prevent the unlawful entry of Chinese into theUnited States by the appointment of suitable officers to enforce the laws in relation thereto and for expenses of returning to China all Chinese persons found to be unlawfully in the United States. including the cost of imprisonment and actual expense of conveying Chinese to the frontier or seaboard for deportation. and for enfrcing the provisions of.the act approvedlitay 5.1892. entitled "An act to~prohibit the com~in."g of Chinese persons into the United States." .Ihave the honor to inform you that there are thirtyseven inspectors employed in the enforcement of the Chinese exclusion laws. and that the saarienand actual and necessary traveling expenses of such officers from Jly 1 fto (O.toher 31.189. amounted to 2.4932l. Akt the same ratio it will reqinre for th remainder of the current flscal year the sum of -1.70S to pay the salaries and expenses of saidofficers. SThere was advanced to the collectors of customs on the Pacific Coast. who have been designated disbursing officers for the payment of the expenses of Chinese sentenced to deportationto China the sum of $5.000. and it will probably require 20.0i0 to pay such expenses during the remainder of the current iscal year.
